Bridging the gap between what is and what can be: introducing Matrix

Mobility

Looking at all the fabulous new mobility technologies coming onto the market – from new ways of owning, sharing and using vehicles, to entirely new ways of getting around – the future of transport looks bright. So why is the transport of today still so beset by crowds and congestion?

There’s one simple yet monumental gap between the technological potential and reality – a thorough understanding of how people, at a population-level, travel today.

As a team, we’re led by the vision of seamlessly connected, enjoyable journeys for all. We wholeheartedly believe it can happen.

We talk to transportation planners, owners and providers from all over the world, yet across their diverse business needs, one essential blind spot comes up over and over again: how do people travel within and between cities, and how can I adapt my services to their needs?

Here’s a sample of questions, so you can see what I mean:

  • My bus service used to be busy and it no longer is – where have my passengers gone?
  • If my trains are overcrowded, is it better to add more carriages or run services more frequently? Or should we consider brand new lines?
  • If I want to reduce road traffic, what alternative modes of transport might incentivize people to make the switch?
  • If I successfully launched my service in New York, how do I replicate success in LA?

The issue is data. Most of our customers have lots of it, but rarely is it enough in and of itself.

The data gap

The old methods of studying journey patterns, surveys and physical counters have long since ceased to deliver meaningful value to mobility planners and operators. Understanding what some people in a given community needed from travel options at some point in the past isn’t a great predictor of what everyone wants. This also gives little indication of what people will want tomorrow, or what may prompt them to change their travel behaviors.

The new app-based technologies provide a limited view of how a similarly small sample of people may be travelling today, but they lack accuracy of scale and the inclusivity that comes with it.

A new solution

At Teralytics, we believe in the power of mobility insight to improve journeys for everyone.

This is why we’ve packaged our data science expertise and our mobility know-how into a tool that’s instantly accessible, unrivalled in its accuracy, and representative of people’s travel needs.

I’m thrilled to introduce Matrix – our subscription service that enables you to have an immediate understanding of how people are traveling in your town, your region or between specific points of interest.

Teralytics Matrix enables understanding of how people travel within and between cities.

As people’s travel needs change at an ever faster pace, we believe that the only way to plan mobility services likely to still be relevant tomorrow is by turning what used to be a once-a-year (or once-every-five-years) investigation of people’s travel behaviors, into an ongoing, always-on interest in how people want to travel – weekday to weekend, this month to next month, winter to spring.
